The Story of Russell Harvey’s Eagle Project

When Russell Harvey began working toward his Eagle Scout rank last year, his father suggested he check with Sandhills Children’s Center. And when he received a list of needs from the Southern Pines Campus, a new nature trail piqued his interest. “With the digital age being ushered in, having a place outside to enjoy might be just the thing for the children,” Harvey said. Little did he know this project would lead him from the tall pines surrounding the center to the halls of the Historic Courthouse in Carthage. Because some of the land on which Harvey wished to build a nature trail and outdoor classroom was owned by the county, the high school senior found himself in a different situation than expected. He had to request an easement of land from the Moore County Board of Commissioners. It was a success. After months of gathering donated supplies, building berms to prevent erosion, cutting wood, hammering nails, and receiving feedback from teachers, the Russell Harvey Outdoor Classroom and Nature Trail are complete.

Helping Children Grow is a cookbook made up of recipes collected by Sandhills Children’s Center. The cookbooks will be available at various events throughout this Fall as well as at this year’s Festival of Trees.

The recipes in the book were submitted by parents, volunteers and employees from Sandhills Children’s Center and all proceeds from sale of the books will go to benefit the work that is ongoing in both Southern Pines and Rockingham at our two campuses.
